Leyna Bernstein is an independent consultant working with nonprofits in the areas of strategy,
planning, and search. Before starting her consulting practice, Leyna spent 11 years as senior
staff at 3 Bay Area nonprofit support centers. She was the Director of Programs at The CBO
Center, the Program Director for the Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership of Marin;
and Director of Consulting Services at The Management Center. Ms. Bernstein has extensive
experience consulting with nonprofit organizations throughout Northern California, and has
taught and lectured on nonprofit management and board issues in the Bay Area and beyond.
Prior to her career in the nonprofit sector, Ms. Bernstein spent a decade as a human resources
executive for The Gap, Inc, The Nature Company, and Smith & Hawken. She is the author of
“Creating Your Employee Handbook: A Do-It-Yourself Kit for Nonprofits”, published by Jossey
Bass.
