One of the things I appreciated
about [Olive Grove] is that she
was able to offer a lot of choice
in terms of consultants that
could have worked with us, I
certainly had the sense that if I
hadn’t clicked with those
people, they would have had
other options

Founded in 1935, SFMOMA was the first museum on the West Coast devoted to modern and contemporary art. From the
outset, the museum has championed the most innovative and challenging art of its time, and continues to exhibit and
collect work by both modern masters and younger, less-established artists.
Since Mario Botta's iconic building transformed the cityscape of San Francisco in 1995, SFMOMA has anchored the
downtown Yerba Buena area. This vibrant district reflects the tremendous excitement and growth within SFMOMA. The
museum's collection has more than doubled in size, annual attendance has tripled to 600,000, and membership has
grown apace. In 2009, SFMOMA formed a partnership with the Fisher family to house and display the renowned art
collection of GAP founders Doris and Donald Fisher. The collection, amassed over the last four decades, includes more
than 1,100 works by 185 artists created from 1928 to the present. Upon completing the expansion of SFMOMA's
facilities, the Fisher Collection will be presented in a dedicated new building.
The Snøhetta expansion (over 225,000 sq. ft.) will double the museum's exhibition and education space while enhancing
the visitor experience and more deeply weaving the museum into the fabric of the city. During the next five years,
marketing and communications will help build upon the emerging potential of the new museum, maximize the opportunity
to broaden the museum's audience and deepen engagement with visitors.
The Director of Marketing and Communications is a vital member of SFMOMA's senior leadership team and will play a
significant role in the museum's planned expansion. She or he will craft and implement brand strategy, market
intelligence, marketing, communications, publications, community partnership, audience development, social media and
visitor service initiatives in support of SFMOMA, its programs and goals at this remarkable moment in its history.
